Alchemical Hydra
The Alchemical Hydra is the best Slayer boss in OSRS, requiring 95 Slayer and a Hydra task from Konar. It drops the Hydra Claw (combined with Zamorakian Hasta to make Dragon Hunter Lance), Brimstone Ring pieces, and Hydra Leather (for Ferocious Gloves). At 3-4.5M GP/hr, it is one of the most profitable repeatable activities in the game.
Requirements
- 95 Slayer (cannot be boosted)
- Hydra task from Konar (only Slayer Master that assigns Hydra)
- 70+ Ranged (90+ recommended for efficiency)
The Four Phases
Hydra changes color every 3 attacks based on chemical pools:
Green Phase (Ranged)
Pray: Protect from Ranged
Lure Hydra over the RED chemical pool to remove its damage reduction. Attack with Ranged. Dodge the poison pools.
Blue Phase (Magic)
Pray: Protect from Magic
Lure over the GREEN pool. Hydra shoots lightning across the room — dodge by moving perpendicular to the lightning path.
Red Phase (Ranged)
Pray: Protect from Ranged
Lure over the BLUE pool. Hydra launches fire walls. Walk through the gap in the fire wall to avoid damage.
Grey Phase (Jad Phase)
No chemical pool needed. Hydra alternates Ranged and Magic attacks like Jad. Watch the attack animation and switch prayers. This phase continues until Hydra dies.
Gear Setup
- Ranged: Armadyl/Masori, Twisted Bow (BIS) or Dragon Hunter Crossbow (BIS crossbow), Anguish
- Special: Toxic Blowpipe spec for healing
- Prayer: 4-6 Prayer Potions
- Supplies: 6-10 food, antidote++
Notable Drops
- Hydra Claw: 60M+ (1/1001). Makes Dragon Hunter Lance
- Hydra Tail: 8M (1/512). Makes Bonecrusher Necklace
- Hydra Eye/Fang/Heart: Brimstone Ring pieces (1/181 each)
- Hydra Leather: 8M (1/514). Makes Ferocious Gloves
- Average kill value: 100-130K GP
Tips
- Count attacks. Hydra switches phase every 3 attacks. Count and prepare to switch prayers.
- Lure to the correct pool. Wrong pool = Hydra keeps its damage reduction.
- Jad phase is the most dangerous. Focus on prayer switches over DPS.
- Bring a Bonecrusher for the regular Hydras you kill for KC.
