Runecrafting: Not As Bad As You Think

Runecrafting has a reputation as the worst skill to train in OSRS, but the 2026 meta has made it significantly more bearable. With Guardians of the Rift offering an engaging minigame experience and Blood Runes providing decent AFK profit, getting 99 Runecrafting is more achievable than ever.

Training Methods

Levels 1-23: Questing

Complete Enter the Abyss miniquest, The Eyes of Glouphrie, Lunar Diplomacy, and Devious Minds for free RC XP. This alone can get you past the painful early levels.

Levels 23-77: Lava Runes (Fastest)

XP Rate: 65-75K/hr
Cost: ~5-8 GP/XP (expensive)

Combine Earth Runes with Fire Runes at the Fire Altar using a Binding Necklace and Ring of Dueling. Extremely click-intensive but the fastest RC training method. Use Magic Imbue spell (Lunar) to avoid losing talisman charges.

Levels 27-99: Guardians of the Rift (Best Overall)

XP Rate: 40-65K/hr (scales with level)
Cost: Free (actually profitable)

The GOTR minigame is the most popular Runecrafting training method and for good reason. It is engaging, gives decent XP, and rewards you with the Raiments of the Eye outfit (60% extra runes when runecrafting) and the Abyssal Lantern. Play on dedicated GOTR worlds for the best experience.

Levels 77-99: Blood Runes (AFK + Profit)

XP Rate: 35-40K/hr
Profit: 400-600K GP/hr

Craft Blood Runes at the Arceuus altar. Very AFK with a repetitive mine-chisel-craft loop. Slower XP than other methods but profitable and low-effort. Perfect for watching shows while training.

Levels 90-99: Wrath Runes (Profit)

XP Rate: 30-35K/hr
Profit: 800K-1.2M GP/hr

Requires Dragon Slayer 2. Higher profit than Blood Runes but slightly more attention needed. Wrath Runes are always in demand for PvM.

Alternative: ZMI Altar (Ourania)

XP Rate: 45-55K/hr
Cost: Free

Run to the ZMI altar and craft random runes for good XP. Slightly faster than GOTR but more tedious and less rewarding in terms of unlocks.

Raiments of the Eye: 60% more runes crafted (from GOTR). Essential for profitable RC
Giant Pouch: Holds 12 extra essence. Unlock at 75 RC from GOTR
Daeyalt Essence: 50% more XP per essence. Mine in Darkmeyer (requires Sins of the Father)
Abyss access: Fastest altar access for traditional runecrafting

Recommended Path

1-27: Quest XP rewards
27-77: Guardians of the Rift (collect full Raiments + Lantern)
77-99: Blood Runes for AFK profit, or continue GOTR for faster XP
Alternative: Lava Runes 23-77 if you want fastest XP and dont mind the cost
