OSRS Sailing Guide 1-99 (2026): Complete Training Guide
Sailing is Old School RuneScape's first new skill in over 12 years, officially released on November 19, 2025. It is a members-only skill that lets you captain your own ship, explore the seas of Gielinor, complete sea trials, salvage shipwrecks, and undertake naval combat. This guide covers the fastest and most efficient path from level 1 to 99.
Getting Started: The Pandemonium Quest
To begin training Sailing, you must first complete the introductory quest Pandemonium. This quest has no skill requirements and is available to all members. Head to Port Sarim docks and speak to Will or Anne to begin. Completing Pandemonium grants your first raft, teaches you the core Sailing mechanics, and gives an early XP boost to kickstart your training.
Key Ship Upgrades
Ship upgrades dramatically affect your XP rates and efficiency. Prioritise these upgrades as soon as you unlock them:
Teak Hull (Level 31): The single most impactful early upgrade — gives a ~15% speed boost worth 5,000–10,000 extra XP/hour in trials.
Upgraded Sails (Level 45): Increases wind bonus efficiency.
Crew Quarters (Level 55): Allows hiring better crew members who reduce sailing effort.
Mahogany Hull (Level 65): Large speed increase for late-game trials.
Master Rigging (Level 80): Near-maximum speed for elite Barracuda Trials.
Tip: Every 60 seconds while actively sailing, a wind icon appears — click your sails immediately for a 12-second speed boost and 150–300 bonus XP. Over a long session, this adds 10,000–15,000 passive XP per hour.
Levels 1–30: Courier Tasks & Port Tasks
At low levels, the best method is a combination of Port Tasks and Sea Charting. Port Tasks involve fetching, delivering, and docking at nearby ports, rewarding consistent XP per run. Sea Charting adds exploration bonuses on top.
Expected XP rates: 15,000–30,000 XP/hour at this level range.
Levels 30–50: Barracuda Trials (Early)
Starting at level 30, you can access Barracuda Trials — timed sea-racing challenges that are the core XP method for the skill. The early trials (Port Sarim Circuit) are manageable with a basic raft and some upgrades.
Expected XP rates: 40,000–70,000 XP/hour depending on ship setup.
Levels 50–72: Shipwreck Salvaging & Jubbly Jive
At level 50+, the Gwenith Glide Barracuda Trial becomes accessible and offers significantly better XP. Focus on upgrading your Teak Hull first before attempting this route. Alternatively, Shipwreck Salvaging (unlocked at level 15) provides a great AFK option — lower XP per hour but minimal attention required.
Active XP rates: 80,000–120,000 XP/hour
AFK (Salvaging): 30,000–50,000 XP/hour
Levels 70–99: High-Level Barracuda Trials
From level 70 onwards with a Mahogany Hull or better, the highest-tier Barracuda Trials are the fastest path to 99. Optimal route consistency matters more than chasing small per-hour optimisations — stick to your best trial and execute efficiently every run.
Expected XP rates: 150,000–200,000+ XP/hour with optimal ship and crew.
AFK Alternative: Shipwreck Salvaging
If you prefer low-effort training, Shipwreck Salvaging is the best AFK method for Sailing. While XP rates are lower than active Trials, it's excellent for players who want to train while doing other things. Unlock it at level 15 and return to it whenever you want a break from active play.
Time & Cost Estimates
With optimal methods, reaching level 99 Sailing takes approximately 120–150 hours. Sailing is considered a "buyable-lite" skill — you don't purchase XP directly, but you must invest GP into ship upgrades, crew wages, and supplies. A budget run to 99 costs around 20–30 million GP, while using premium upgrades throughout can raise this to 40–60M.
Sailing in 2026: What's Coming
The 2026 OSRS roadmap promises major Sailing expansions. Upcoming additions include new Tortugan quests, sea bosses, a player-designed island, and a reworked ship combat system planned for mid-2026. Getting your Sailing level up now puts you ahead of future content that will require higher levels to access.
Conclusion
Sailing is one of the most exciting skill additions in OSRS history. The fastest path to 99 runs through Barracuda Trials with consistent ship upgrades, while Shipwreck Salvaging offers a solid AFK alternative. With major expansions on the horizon, investing time into Sailing now will pay dividends as new content rolls out throughout 2026.
