Mining Training Overview

Mining is one of the core skills in OSRS with multiple training paths depending on whether you want speed, AFK, or profit. The 2026 meta offers more options than ever with Shooting Stars, Volcanic Mine, and the reliable Motherlode Mine all competing for your attention.

Fastest Methods (Active)

Levels 1-15: Copper/Tin

Mine at any mine near a bank. Lumbridge Swamp mine works well. Drop ores as you mine (shift+click drop).

Levels 15-45: Iron Ore (3-tick Mining)

XP Rate: 50-70K/hr
Mine Iron at the Mining Guild or Al Kharid mine. Three rocks in a triangle pattern for fastest XP. Drop everything.

Levels 45-99: Granite (3-tick Mining)

XP Rate: 90-120K/hr
The fastest Mining XP in the game. Mine Granite in the Quarry south of the Bandit Camp. Use Humidify spell for waterskins or bring plenty. Extremely click-intensive but unmatched XP rates.

AFK Methods

Levels 30-72+: Motherlode Mine

XP Rate: 30-55K/hr
The most popular Mining method. Mine pay-dirt veins, clean them in the hopper, and receive random ores. Unlocks the Mining outfit (2.5% bonus XP) and access to the upper level (72+) which is more AFK.

Levels 50+: Shooting Stars

XP Rate: 10-30K/hr (very AFK)
Find crashed stars across Gielinor and mine them with other players. Extremely AFK, gives Stardust for Celestial Ring (+4 invisible Mining boost). Great while doing other activities.

Levels 70+: Volcanic Mine

XP Rate: 80-95K/hr
Team-based Mining minigame on Fossil Island. Excellent XP rates with moderate attention required. Less click-intensive than Granite but requires coordination.

Levels 92-99: Amethyst

XP Rate: 20-25K/hr (extremely AFK)
Profit: 400-500K GP/hr
Mine Amethyst in the Mining Guild. Incredibly AFK with long mining intervals. Make Amethyst dart tips or broad bolts for best profit. Great for alt accounts.

1-30: Quests (Doric Quest, The Dig Site, etc.) + Iron
30-72: Motherlode Mine for outfit and nuggets
72-85: Upper Motherlode Mine (AFK) or Volcanic Mine (fast)
85-92: Volcanic Mine or continue MLM
92-99: Amethyst for profit or Granite for speed
