Starting Your Ironman Journey

Playing Ironman in OSRS is a completely different experience from a main account. You cannot trade, use the Grand Exchange, or receive items from other players. Everything you use must be earned, crafted, or dropped by monsters. It is the ultimate self-sufficient challenge and many players say it is the best way to experience OSRS.

This guide covers the optimal progression path for all Ironman modes in 2026: regular Ironman, Hardcore Ironman (HCIM), and Group Ironman (GIM).

Early Game (Levels 1-50)

Tutorial Island to Lumbridge

After Tutorial Island, your first priorities are:

Complete Waterfall Quest for instant 30 Attack and Strength
Do Witchs House for Hitpoints XP
Start Wintertodt at 10 HP — this is controversial but doing WT early means you take less damage and can stock up on seeds, ores, and supplies for later
Thieve men/women to 20 Thieving for early cash

Essential Early Unlocks

Fairy Rings: Start Fairy Tale Part 2 (can use rings without finishing quest)
Graceful outfit: Train Agility at Rooftop courses for Marks of Grace
Fire Cape: Work toward this as soon as you have 61+ Ranged and Ibans Blast

Mid Game (Levels 50-80)

Slayer is King

For Ironmen, Slayer is the single most important skill. It provides:

Combat XP across all styles
Alchs and cash from drops
Essential item unlocks (Trident, Whip, Black Mask)
Seeds for Farming
Herbs for Herblore

Start Slayer as soon as you have a Black Mask (from Cave Horrors at 58 Slayer) and work your way up. Use Konar for early points, then switch to Nieve/Steve.

Key Milestones

Barrows Gloves: Complete Recipe for Disaster. This is your top mid-game goal.
Fighter Torso: Get this from Barbarian Assault. Free BIS strength body.
Iban Blast: Complete Underground Pass for your first good magic weapon.
Dragon Defender: Farm Warriors Guild for this essential off-hand.
Herb runs: Do every herb run. Herblore is the biggest bottleneck for Ironmen.

Late Game (Levels 80-99)

Gear Progression

Unlike mains who buy gear, Ironmen must grind bosses for drops:

Trident of the Seas: 87 Slayer from Kraken. Your first real magic weapon upgrade.
Abyssal Whip: 85 Slayer from Abyssal Demons. BIS melee training weapon.
Zenyte jewelry: Kill Demonic Gorillas for Zenyte Shards. Torture, Anguish, and Tormented bracelet.
GWD gear: Farm Bandos, Armadyl, and Saradomin for armor upgrades.
Bowfa + Crystal armor: Corrupted Gauntlet is the best mid-late game grind. Zero supply cost, amazing weapon.

The Corrupted Gauntlet Grind

CG is considered the most important grind for Ironmen. The Bowfa (Bow of Faerdhinen) with full Crystal armor rivals Twisted Bow at many bosses and costs nothing to use. Expect 100-400 completions for the Enhanced Crystal Weapon Seed.

End Game Goals

Chambers of Xeric: Farm for Twisted Bow, Prayer Scrolls, and Ancestral
Theatre of Blood: Scythe of Vitur and Sanguinesti Staff
Tombs of Amascut: Osmumtens Fang and Masori armor
Infernal Cape: The ultimate flex on an Ironman
Quest Cape: Complete all quests
Achievement Diaries: Complete all Elite diaries

Ironman-Specific Tips

Never skip herb runs. Herblore supplies are your biggest bottleneck. Do every run.
Birdhouse runs for passive Hunter XP and bird nests (tree seeds).
Kingdom of Miscellania: Keep it funded for passive herbs, seeds, and coal/logs.
Save your teleport scrolls and runes. Resources matter more on an Iron.
Join an Ironman clan for tips, motivation, and group activities you can still do.

Group Ironman (GIM) Tips

GIM allows you to trade with your group members, which changes the meta significantly:

Assign roles: one player focuses on Slayer, one on Skilling, one on bossing
Share duplicate drops and resources
