OSRS Combat Guide 2026: Complete Training for All Combat Styles
Combat is at the heart of Old School RuneScape. Whether you're grinding Slayer, bossing for rare drops, or working toward a max cape, your combat stats determine what content you can access and how efficiently you can complete it. This guide covers the fastest and most efficient training methods for every combat style in 2026.
Understanding Combat in OSRS
OSRS uses a combat triangle where Melee beats Ranged, Ranged beats Magic, and Magic beats Melee. Your overall combat level is calculated from your Attack, Strength, Defence, Hitpoints, Prayer, Ranged, and Magic levels. Most players focus on a specific combat style first, then round out the others.
Your combat level formula: Combat = 0.25 × (Defence + Hitpoints + floor(Prayer / 2)) + 0.325 × max(Attack + Strength, floor(Ranged × 1.5), floor(Magic × 1.5))
Melee Training: Attack, Strength & Defence
Early Levels (1–40): Questing Is King
The fastest way to get through low combat levels is questing. The following quests give significant combat XP and can skip you past the boring early grind:
Waterfall Quest – 13,750 Attack XP + 13,750 Strength XP (no combat required). Takes you straight to level 30 in both stats.
Fight Arena – 12,175 Attack XP
Tree Gnome Village – 11,450 Strength XP
Vampire Slayer – 4,825 Attack XP
Witch's House – 6,325 Hitpoints XP
Completing these quests before touching combat training will save you hours of grinding the early levels.
Levels 40–70: Crabs & Slayer
Sand Crabs (Hosidius) and Ammonite Crabs (Fossil Island) are the go-to AFK training spots. They have high HP, low defence, and respawn quickly. Use the best melee weapon you can equip and train on the controlled/accurate/aggressive style depending on which stat you want to prioritise.
Levels 40–60: Rock Crabs or Sand Crabs
Levels 60–70: Ammonite Crabs or start Slayer for money + XP
Levels 70–99: Slayer & NMZ
Nightmare Zone (NMZ) is the most popular AFK training method from 70 to 99. You fight bosses you've previously defeated in quests, giving excellent XP rates with minimal attention required. Use the best gear you can afford — Dharok's set gives the highest XP rates when near low HP.
Slayer is the best method if you want to make money while training. Assign Slayer tasks from masters like Nieve or Duradel and work through high-value tasks like Abyssal Demons, Gargoyles, and Dark Beasts.
Ranged Training 1–99
Early Levels (1–40): Questing + Ogres
Complete Horror from the Deep for a Ranged lamp, and kill Ogres at the Ranged Guild for fast early XP. Alternatively, use Cannon placement at popular spots to blast through early levels in minutes.
Levels 40–70: Chinning & Crabs
Sand Crabs work just as well for Ranged as they do for Melee. If you have budget, using a cannon at multi-combat areas like Ape Atoll gives the fastest XP rates in the game — up to 1M XP/hr with red chins at Maniacal Monkeys.
Levels 70–99: Chinning at Maniacal Monkeys
Maniacal Monkeys in Ape Atoll are the gold standard for Ranged training. Red chinchompas in the monkey area stacks multi-combat hits, giving up to 900K–1.1M XP/hr. This is the fastest Ranged training in the game.
Void Range gear recommended for budget chinning
Blowpipe + scales is excellent for AFK Ranged training at crabs
Magic Training 1–99
The Fastest Method: High Alchemy
High Alchemy (High Alch) is the most popular Magic training method. You cast it on items worth close to or above their alch value to minimise loss. Popular alch items include yew longbows, magic longbows, and various Slayer drop items.
XP rate: ~78,000 XP/hr
Cost: Depends on item used — can be near break-even
Requires: 55 Magic
Splashing (Cheapest, Very AFK)
Equip gear with -64 Magic attack bonus to intentionally miss every spell. You'll still gain XP from casting. This is extremely AFK (can splash for 20 minutes unattended) but slow (~7K XP/hr). Good for players who want to train Magic passively.
Burst/Barrage at Maniacal Monkeys or Dust Devils
Ice Burst and Ice Barrage are the fastest Magic training methods in the game, hitting multiple NPCs simultaneously. At Maniacal Monkeys, you can achieve 300K–400K XP/hr with Ice Burst, or 500K+ XP/hr with Ice Barrage — though both are expensive.
Defence Training
Defence is best trained alongside Melee using the "defensive" attack style, or by using Magic (every Magic XP gives shared Hitpoints/Defence XP if you select the right stance). For most accounts, Defence is trained passively while doing Slayer or NMZ.
Note: Pures (low Defence builds) intentionally skip or cap Defence at 1, 40, 45, or 70 depending on the build. See our OSRS Account Builds guide for more detail.
Combat Training Tips for 2026
Always use the best weapon you can afford. The difference between using a Dragon Scimitar vs a Rune Scimitar at level 60 is significant.
Prayer significantly boosts XP rates. Piety (at 70 Prayer) gives +25% Strength, +23% Attack, +25% Defence — use it at bosses and in NMZ.
Slayer is almost always worth doing over pure combat training once you hit 70+ stats, as the GP offsets training costs.
Chinning is expensive but fast. Budget 50–200M GP for a full Ranged grind at Maniacal Monkeys.
Use the best Slayer master you're eligible for. Duradel (at 100 Combat + 50 Slayer) gives the best tasks.
