OSRS Sailing Update May 2026: Buffs, Changes & More
Jagex has just dropped a massive update blog covering the next wave of Sailing changes — and there is something here for almost every type of player. After months of community feedback, the team is refocusing on the parts of Sailing that matter most: faster Port Tasks, more rewarding boat combat, double Deep Sea Trawling XP, a customisable side panel, new sail cosmetics, Frost Dragon Slayer unlocks and more. Some of these changes go live as early as this week, while others launch with the Red Reef quest in May 2026.
Below is a clean breakdown of everything that is changing, what it means for your training, and how to take advantage of it.
📌 Quick Summary
Port Tasks: 10–15% Sailing XP boost across the board.
Courier Tasks: New Loot Sacks with Dragon Sheets, Nails, Cannonballs and Shark Paint.
Bounty Tasks: Longer tasks, fixed ports per creature, and better Sailing-specific drops.
Boat Combat: Cannon auto-retaliate, solo high-level spawns, and easier looting.
Side Panel: Facilities are now fully moveable inside the side panel.
Slayer: New unlocks for Frost Dragon weighting and task length, plus better Dragon Sheet drops.
Deep Sea Trawling: ~2x Sailing XP, gather rate from 4 ticks to 3, and baited shoals fix.
Cosmetics: 7 new basic sail colours unlocked at level 41 Sailing.
QoL: Right-click "Last Boat" teleport, Wind Mote special, boostable support facilities, Telekinetic Grab on Lost Crates.
🚢 Port Tasks – Faster XP & Better Loot
Both Courier and Bounty Tasks are getting a 10–15% Sailing XP boost. This positions Port Tasks as the medium-intensity training option sitting between AFK Salvaging and the click-heavy Barracuda Trials.
Courier Tasks
Completing Courier Tasks will now reward Loot Sacks (similar to Hunter Rumour sacks) containing:
Dragon Sheets
Bronze → Dragon Nails
Iron → Dragon Cannonballs
Shark Paint (currently 1/36 from Port Tasks)
Other thematic boat-building supplies
Sack rewards scale with the level of the task and the delivery distance. The GP that was previously paid out directly is being rolled into the Loot Sack. A long-standing bug preventing two Courier Tasks with the same cargo type from running together is also being fixed.
Bounty Tasks
Bounty Tasks are being repositioned as the best way to farm sea creature uniques:
Higher chance of Sailing-specific drops while on task.
Bounty Tasks will be longer on average.
Every sea creature now has a dedicated Port with a permanent Bounty Task for it (for example, Deepfin Point will always offer Veiled Kraken, Fremennik will always offer Vampyre Kraken).
⚔️ Boat Combat Buffs
Sea creature drops are getting a major boost. Armoured Krakens, Vampyre Krakens, Veiled Krakens and Great White Sharks will all drop high-value Sailing items (Dragon Sheets, Keel parts, Echo Pearl, Dragon Cannon Barrel) more frequently. Orcas are being added to the Dragon Sheets loot table.
Other combat changes:
Cannon auto-retaliate – polled feature that will let your cannon fire back automatically while you are locked into it.
Solo spawns of high-level sea creatures are being mapped so you can take them down 1-on-1.
Looting improvements – crew-mate looting, visual loot indicators and AoE loot options are being explored.
Bosun's Bench – a polled repair facility coming with Red Reef (63 Sailing, 54 Construction).
Clue Scrolls from Sailing creatures will finally be boosted by Combat Achievements.
🧭 Side Panel – Moveable Facilities
No more scrolling past cannons to reach your Cargo Hold. The side panel is being reworked so you can reorder facilities however you like, accessible from the Shipyard. Frequently used facilities (cannons, salvaging hook, trawling net) can now be placed exactly where you want them.
🐉 Slayer – Frost Dragon Unlocks
Two new Slayer unlocks are being polled to keep Frost Dragons relevant for Sailing material farmers:
Weighting unlock (100 Slayer points): Increases Frost Dragon weighting on Nieve & Duradel from 5 → 8.
Task length unlock (100 Slayer points): Duradel 70–120 → 180–240, Nieve 60–100 → 180–240.
Dragon Sheet drop rates are also improving both on-task and off-task:
Lava Strykewyrm: 1/30 on task · 1/75 off task
Frost Dragons: 1/40 on task · 1/100 off task
🎣 Deep Sea Trawling – Double Sailing XP
One of the biggest changes in this update. Deep Sea Trawling is getting:
~2x Sailing XP (it was simply too low for how active the method is).
Gather rate reduced from 4 ticks to 3, keeping the one-tick method viable but smoother for relaxed play.
Baited shoals bug fix – they will finally apply the intended 20% catch-rate bonus.
Fishing XP is intentionally not being touched here, as Jagex wants Deep Sea Trawling to remain the profitable Fishing method rather than the meta XP method. Regular Fishing spots at sea are also being polled, with Sloops/Skiffs handling rod fishing and Rafts handling harpoon, net and lobster pot fishing.
💎 Unique Item Buffs
As part of the next Summer Sweep-Up, Jagex is considering buffs to Belle's Folly and the Aquanite Hopper. The Medallion of the Deep is being polled to reduce oxygen depletion by 80% inside the Fossil Island underwater Agility/Thieving area. Several Horn of Plenty bugs are also being patched.
🎨 Sail Cosmetics
Unlocking at Level 41 Sailing, a new sail customisation system launches alongside Red Reef with 7 starter colours: Black, Blue, Green, Pink, Purple, Red and Yellow. Each is crafted with 10 of the matching dye. This is mainly a systems change that paves the way for future sail designs and possibly another player-designed competition.
🛠️ Miscellaneous QoL
Teleport to Boat gets a right-click "Last Boat" option.
Ancient Furnace can now unnote metal bars for cannonballs (100 gp per bar) — passed at 92% in the Gathering Efficiencies poll.
Special Attack button can now release Wind Motes while you are at the Helm — perfect for zooming across Gielinor.
Boostable support facilities (Cargo Hold, Range, Anchor, Wind/Gale Catcher, Crystal Extractor, etc.) can be used after boost wears off. Active facilities (cannons, salvaging hook, trawling net, chum station) still require the real level.
Telekinetic Grab works on Lost Crates.
Cooked Sailing food will look more vibrant.
Tiny 1/800,000 chance for Soup from sorting Salvage. 🍲
🐛 Bug Fixes
Boat Bottle indicator no longer gets hidden in the Shipyard interface.
Sailing items are unblocked from Death's Coffer now that prices have stabilised.
Cargo Hold can no longer be replaced or bottled while still holding cargo without proper warnings.
📅 What's Next?
Some of these updates are landing as early as this week, with the bigger features arriving alongside the Red Reef quest in May. The focus moving forward is on Port Tasks, Combat and Deep-Sea Trawling. Pirate Encounters is no longer launching with Red Reef (though boat-to-boat combat will still feature in the quest), and the next Barracuda Trial is paused while the team prioritises core improvements, the player-designed island Wyrmscraig, and the upcoming Sequel Quest.
