Sailing Gets a Massive Year of Updates
The Sailing skill launched in late 2025, making it OSRS first new skill in over a decade. Now in 2026, Jagex is going all-in on expanding Sailing with updates every quarter. If you thought the initial launch was just the beginning, you were right.
Spring 2026: Ship Combat Rework
The first major update reworks ship combat from the ground up:
Traditional combat from boats now acts the same as on land. Your gear and combat stats actually matter on the water
Ranged gear counts towards ranged accuracy and strength when using sailing cannons
New weapon hotspots on the Sloop for mounting different weapons
Enemy NPC boats that patrol sea areas and can be attacked for loot
New method for Dragon Cannon Barrel drop
New Port Tasks including protecting NPC boats from enemies
This update dropped in March 2026 and is already live, making naval combat feel like a real combat experience rather than a minigame.
Summer 2026: The Red Reef Quest & Player Islands
The Red Reef Quest
A new quest tied to the Sailing skill. Details are limited but expect new lore about the seas of Gielinor, new rewards, and potentially new Sailing training methods unlocked after completion.
NPC Boat Combat
Building on the spring combat rework, summer adds more NPC boats with unique encounters and loot tables. Sea combat becomes a viable money-making and training method.
Player-Designed Island
In a true community-driven move, Jagex is creating a player-designed island. The community will have input on the design, content, and features of this new explorable area. This could become a unique hub with skilling resources, monsters, or a new minigame.
Fall 2026: Barracuda Trial & Quest Continuation
Barracuda Trial: A new Sailing challenge that tests your naval skills. Likely a time-trial or combat gauntlet on the open seas
Continuation of an existing quest with Sailing-integrated mechanics
Winter 2026: New Sea Area
The biggest Sailing expansion of the year: an entirely new sea area to explore. This opens up new territory with fresh content, monsters, resources, and potentially new islands to discover. Think of it as a new region but on the water.
Why You Should Be Leveling Sailing Now
With so much Sailing content dropping throughout 2026, having a high Sailing level will give you immediate access to new content on release day. Higher Sailing unlocks:
Better ships with more weapon slots
Access to more dangerous (and profitable) sea areas
Ability to take on tougher NPC ships
Access to new islands and content areas
Current Sailing Training Methods
If you have not started Sailing yet, the best training methods include:
Port tasks: Complete delivery and combat tasks for XP
Ship combat: Fight NPC ships (improved in spring 2026)
Exploration: Discover new islands and map locations
Resource gathering: Fish, mine, and forage on discovered islands
