Two Games, One Universe
In 2026, RuneScape exists as two distinct games: Old School RuneScape (OSRS) and RuneScape 3 (RS3). Both share the same world of Gielinor but offer completely different experiences. This guide helps you decide which one to play, or whether to try both.
Combat
OSRS: Tick-Based, Simple Yet Deep
OSRS uses a tick-based combat system where you click and wait. Sounds simple, but the depth comes from prayer flicking, gear switching, and managing multiple mechanics simultaneously. High-level PvM like the Inferno or Raids requires incredible precision within this seemingly simple framework.
RS3: Ability-Based, Action Combat
RS3 uses an ability bar system similar to WoW or FFXIV. You have rotations, cooldowns, defensive abilities, and ultimate abilities. Combat is more visually dynamic and mechanically complex on the surface. With the March 2026 Combat Modernisation update, RS3 combat is more accessible than ever.
Winner: Depends on preference. OSRS rewards precision and knowledge. RS3 rewards mechanical execution and rotation optimization.
Graphics and Presentation
OSRS: Nostalgic 2007 Style
Deliberately retro. The graphics are part of the charm and identity. Recent updates have improved models and effects while maintaining the classic look.
RS3: Modern MMO Visuals
Full 3D environments, dynamic lighting, detailed character models, and cinematic cutscenes. RS3 looks like a modern game and some areas are genuinely beautiful.
Winner: RS3 objectively, but OSRS aesthetics are beloved by its community.
Progression Speed
OSRS: The Long Grind
OSRS is famous for long grinds. 99 in most skills takes 100-300+ hours. Maxing takes 2,000+ hours. The journey IS the game.
RS3: Faster Progression
RS3 has significantly higher XP rates across the board. Skills like Prayer, Construction, and Herblore that cost billions in OSRS are much more accessible in RS3. Maxing takes around 1,000 hours, half of OSRS.
Winner: RS3 if you want to reach end-game faster. OSRS if you enjoy the journey.
PvM Content
OSRS: 4 Raids + Dozens of Bosses
CoX, ToB, ToA, and the upcoming Fractured Archive. Plus standalone bosses like Vorkath, Zulrah, Nex, DT2 bosses, and the Inferno. OSRS PvM is deep and rewarding.
RS3: Even More PvM Content
RS3 has more bosses overall, including Telos, Zamorak, Rasial, Solak, Vorago, and the entire Elite Dungeon series. Boss encounters tend to be more mechanically complex with more phases and abilities to manage.
Winner: Both are excellent. RS3 has more variety. OSRS boss fights feel more raw and intense.
Economy and Monetization
OSRS: Subscription Only
No pay-to-win. No battle pass. No lootboxes. Just a monthly subscription for full access. The GP economy is driven entirely by gameplay.
RS3: Subscription + MTX
RS3 has Treasure Hunter (lootboxes that give XP and items) and Solomon Store (cosmetics). While not as aggressive as some games, the presence of MTX is a dealbreaker for some players.
Winner: OSRS by a mile for fair monetization.
Community
OSRS
Massive Reddit community (1.3M members), active content creator scene, polling system for updates. The community is passionate, vocal, and deeply invested.
RS3
Smaller but dedicated community. More mature playerbase on average. Less drama, more focused on PvM achievements and progression.
